The Victory Boogie Woogie Tunnel

In the heart of The Hague, a masterpiece of engineering and sustainability lights the way for future infrastructure projects. The Victory Boogie Woogie Tunnel is a brilliant fusion of art, technology, and environmental consciousness.

Named after Piet Mondrian’s last, unfinished painting, “Victory Boogie Woogie,” the tunnel represents a vibrant approach to life, expressing joy, hope, and the anticipation of triumph over adversity. This symbolism is aptly reflected in the tunnel’s design and functionality, harmonizing with its environmental ethos.

A Collaboration of Experts

The construction of the Victory Boogie Woogie Tunnel was a monumental task, with BAM Infra Netherlands leading as the main contractor. This effort brought together experts from various fields to create a tunnel that is not only a marvel of engineering but also a beacon of sustainability. The project, finished in 2021, extends 1,860 meters, connecting The Hague’s city center with the Ypenburg junction.

When it comes to making the Victory Boogie Woogie Tunnel one of the most sustainable tunnels in Europe, Intelligent Solar played a crucial role. This Lithuania-based company, renowned for its Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) solutions, provided the tunnel with 450 PowerGlas solar panels. Designed to be unusually large and strong, they met the project’s unique needs, including letting sunlight pass through to keep the tunnel bright with natural light. These solar panels were anticipated to generate about 94,000 kWh annually under optimal conditions.

The experts arranged the cells in a way that would capture as much power as possible while still allowing sunlight to fill the tunnel. This balance is what sets the Victory Boogie Woogie Tunnel apart as a leader in sustainable design.

Setting New Standards

The use of solar panels on the tunnel is a game-changer. It shows how renewable energy can be integrated into nonconventional structures, not just on rooftops or in remote solar farms. Through the use of sustainable materials, cleaner fuels for machinery, and the strategic incorporation of solar panels, the project illustrates the practicality and necessity of sustainable practices in construction.
